Joy Elliott: The Macallan Brand Ambassador

My first job in whisky was almost ten years ago when I was a seasonal tour guide at Glenturret distillery (part of The Edrington Group, The Macallan’s parent company).  I worked during my university holidays while studying for my degree in Psychology. I soon developed a passion for whisky and knew I wanted to pursue a career in the industry. After graduating I became Training and Activation Manager for Global Travel Retail for Edrington – duty free to you and me.

How did you come to work for The Macallan?

As I outlined above, The Macallan and I go way back!  After two years working in Global Travel Retail I was so excited to secure my current role of Macallan Brand Ambassador, back in July last year.  My focus is our exciting new range The 1824 Series.

What’s your signature dram?

It has to be The Macallan Sienna, from our new range The 1824 Series which includes Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby. The 1824 Series showcases the signature style of The Macallan, taking Macallan back to its roots and celebrating two of its greatest strengths; oak sherry casks and natural colour.  Our Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno has created the four whiskies in The 1824 Series by identifying the natural colour formed during maturation in different casks.  This innovative approach is the first to derive the final character from the natural colours created from the interaction of the oak sherry casks and the spirit over the period of maturation.  Bob has been able to work creatively with the full range of matured stock available, rather than working to a pre-determined character based on age. A dram of Sienna has beautiful depth of character and I love the orange, chocolate and dried fruit flavours it delivers.

What does your job with The Macallan entail?

My main remit is training which includes hosting tutored nosings and tastings.  Brand education is a big part of my job and helping in the development of brand training tools. I really support the brand in any way I can.   I’m based in the UK but am lucky enough to work across a number of regions which is great as I really love to travel.

What are the most popular serves / drams in your region?

The Macallan 18 year old sherry oak is a firm favourite; a classic dram.  In terms of serves, The Macallan Ice Ball is very popular and always creates great visual impact. Watch it in action here:

Can you recommend bars in your region that are well stocked with The Macallan?

There are some great bars in Scotland which really deliver on both atmosphere and service, and of course are always well stocked with The Macallan.  In Glasgow, The Bon Accord and Oran Mor are great spots to enjoy a dram and I also love The Bon Vivant in Edinburgh.

As I do travel a lot, I’m also enjoying discovering bars slightly further afield.  The Caledonian in Toronto feels like a home from home and I’d recommend a visit to the increasingly infamous Ten Pound Bar in Montage, Beverly Hills.  Slainte!

What’s your favourite thing about working for The Macallan?

I love the fact I have so much variety.  People enjoy The Macallan all around the world which means I’ve been able to travel to some fantastic places.  But if I had to say just one thing then it would simply be the sheer thrill of sharing my passion for The Macallan with whisky enthusiasts and introducing it to new drinkers – that part of my job really is such a rewarding experience
