Masters of Photography: Master Class
The journey began in Speyside when the most influential living photographer, Elliott Erwitt, started his venture across Scotland to capture the heart of our homeland. This epic journey resulted in 158 images, each interpreting the unique and diverse elements of our Scottish character. Taking inspiration from Elliott’s ‘Great Scottish Adventure’ we challenged you to continue our photographic journey and capture the character of your land for our Master Class competition.
We shared the final fifty from the collection of images you submitted from around the world here on The Moment, but today we unveil the three winning snaps...
Judging this year’s competition was the Chairman of Leica, Andreas Kaufmann, Leica Academy Tutor, Robin Sinha and our very own Director of The Macallan, Ken Grier. Join us, as we discover their favourite three moments you’ve captured on camera...
In third place is ‘Celebrating the Holy Fire’ by Joseph Goric. Taken during the celebrations of Easter in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem, the judges said, Joseph’s image draws the eye to the warm glow of candle light that beams above the frenzied crowd, and that the captured movement gives a real sense of energy.
In second place is Jordi Cohen Colldeforns’ image entitled ‘San Fermin’. The man in the image appears outstretched at the famous festival of San Fermin, a celebration held annually in Pamplona, Spain. The judges said the man’s expression is that of euphoria as he appears to be basking in glory while others look on in admiration. The refreshing water droplets are frozen in time and texture the frame.
And in first place, with a unique image captured by Carolina Navas G, is ‘My Grandmother and her Fears’. The picture was captured in the port city of Tumaco, Colombia and sees an elderly woman in the sea. The judges describe the image as a simple yet intriguing portrait and say the lady’s grimace, dark bathing suit and angular posture, contrast with the soft, muted melancholy background. Her contorted face portrays fear or perhaps pain, as her foot is quickly thrust out of the water.
We’d like to congratulate Carolina, Jordi and Joseph on their winning images; each image took us on a journey and told a unique story which truly captured the character of their homelands. As the winner of our Masters of Photography Master Class competition Carolina will receive the high-performance Leica X Vario and Jordi will be the new owner of the compact Leica C, while Joseph can now enjoy his dram with maximum chill and minimum dilution with The Macallan ice ball maker and glassware.
