The Creativity and Craftsmanship of Concept Number 3

Bringing together the artistry and expertise of whisky making with the bold visual creativity of graphic design, Concept Number 3 is the final release in The Macallan Concept Series.

Graphic designer David Carson visited The Macallan’s beautiful 485-acre Estate in Speyside, Scotland, where he spent time with The Macallan Whisky Maker Polly Logan. During that time they discovered that a remarkable number of similarities define their approach to their respective crafts. Both are driven to revisit and evolve their work, which enables them to create greater depth by ensuring every element has a distinct purpose.

Polly recounts: “Our encounter at the distillery inspired me to create this light, warm, welcoming whisky just like David himself. A bright and fresh whisky, a little unexpected for The Macallan, with a hue which conveys the vibrancy and lightness found within. The colour, California Gold, a light warm yellow, reflects David’s years on the US West Coast.”

Bringing his unique perspective to the design of Concept Number 3, the release features some very special touches to celebrate their shared outlook and methodology - including the incorporation of the letter P for Polly in his bold, collage-style imagery. Many of the colours used are also found at The Macallan Estate, with blue representing the magical River Spey and red reflecting our sherry-seasoned oak casks.

Encased in a striking presentation box featuring David Carson’s unique designs for Concept Number 3, each bottle also features labelling designed by David along with a vibrant chevron symbol bearing his signature.
