Distillery Tour - Frequently Asked Questions

What does the tour include? What parts of the distillery do you see?

Our small tour groups are limited to just 12 people to ensure a luxury, personal experience. Your friendly and knowledgeable guide will explain how we create The Macallan’s rich spirit and introduce you to the ‘Six Pillars’ of The Macallan.  You will learn how our unparalleled investment in the finest casks contributes to the natural colours, aromas and flavours that set The Macallan apart. After a thorough immersion into the world of The Macallan, you will experience a nosing and tasting of a careful selection of The Macallan whiskies, as well as their very foundation, our wonderfully rich new make spirit.

How many people will be on the tour?

Tours are limited to a maximum of 12 people per tour group to ensure a personal experience.

How much does a tour cost?

A tour costs £15.00.

How long is the tour?

The duration of the tour is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

Is it a guided tour?

Tour groups will be guided through the distillery by one of our hosts.

Should I book in advance?

We recommend that tours are booked in advance to guarantee your place. Tours are available to book from 4 weeks in advance. If you would like to reserve a tour for less than 24 hours time, please call +44 (0)1340 318 000. 

What if I want to book for more than 6 people?

If you would like to book a tour for 7 people or more, please call a member of our team on +44 (0)1340 318 000 and we will be happy to assist. For groups of 7 people or more, we kindly ask for a pre-payment at the time of booking.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We recommend that tours are booked at least 10 days in advance in order to avoid disappointment. 

Can I just arrive at the distillery without booking?

We cannot guarantee that there will be availability on the day and we highly recommend booking in advance in order to avoid disappointment. Tours are available to be booked online and also over the phone.

What should I wear on the tour?

The tour takes place throughout our Distillery and Visitor Experience, and as you will enter the production area, we suggest wearing comfortable, layered clothing due to the warmth of our stills. 

What is your cancellation and refunds policy?

We will provide refunds if tours are cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the tour time, after this time, no refunds will be given. Are children permitted on the tour?

Children over the age of 14 are welcome on the Six Pillars tour although anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. We cannot allow children under 14 in to the production area for safety reasons. Nosing and tastings are only available to over 18s - please remember to bring ID.

Is there a café? 

Our brasserie, located within our Visitor Experience, offers great Scottish produce with a twist, and takes inspiration from the long-standing relationship we have enjoyed with El Celler de Can Roca, twice voted best restaurant in the world.

Is there a gift shop? 

The Macallan Boutique is located within the Visitor Experience, and offers a selection of The Macallan whisky and gifts to purchase.

What products do you sell in the gift shop? 

The shop has a comprehensive range of The Macallan whisky for sale and also sells a range of whisky related gifts, glassware and merchandise.

How can I get to the distillery by public transport? 

Unfortunately, at present there is no public transport that serves the distillery directly. There are several train stations in the surrounding area however guests will then need to drive or to take a taxi to access the distillery.

What's the nearest train station to the distillery? 

The nearest train stations to the distillery are Aviemore, Elgin, Huntly and Forres.

Is there disabled access?

Our Distillery and Visitor Centre is fully DDA compliant. Please call a member of our team on +44 (0)1340 318 000 for further information or access requirements for those not using a wheelchair.

Can I take photographs and video? 

Guests are permitted to take photographs and video throughout most of the Distillery and Visitor Experience. There are some parts of the tour where photography is not permitted, and your host will make you aware of these areas.

Is there parking at the distillery?

Entry to the distillery is available on the B9102. This is clearly signed for visitors to The Macallan. The entrance will take you to parking for the Distillery and Visitor Experience for your tour.

When should I arrive for my tour?

Guests are requested to check in with staff at the reception desk in the Visitor Experience at least 10 minutes prior to their tour.

Where does the tour start?

The tour will begin in The Macallan Visitor Experience where you will be welcomed by your host.

What are your opening hours?

Monday - Saturday 09:30 - 18:00
Sunday 12:00 - 18:00

Is there a tasting included in the tour? 

A guided nosing and tasting is included in the Six Pillars tour.

What products are included in the tasting? 

The nosing and tasting includes 2 x 10ml drams. These will be introduced by your host.

Can I visit Easter Elchies House? 

Guests are welcome to visit the grounds and to take photos of the exterior of Easter Elchies House, however, guest access to Easter Elchies house is not part of the tour.

Do I need to print and bring my confirmation email?

There is no requirement for guests to bring their confirmation email as we will have a record of your booking. We will ask for a name and email address on arrival to confirm your booking.

Can I book for a group to visit? 

Guests are able to book for groups of a maximum of 6 people online, if you wish to book for a larger group, please call +44 (0)1340 318 000 and we will be happy to assist you. Tours can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests.

Do you offer discount for group bookings? 

We do not offer a discount for group bookings.
