Harold Macmillan becomes Prime Minister of the UK. Jack Kerouac’s seminal ‘On the Road’ goes
on sale for the first time, and the Space Age begins as the Soviet Union launches Sputnik 1, the first
artificial satellite to orbit the earth. Sputnik 2 is launched later the same year with a dog named ‘Laika’
on board.
