The making of
THE GLASSWARE
Intent on commissioning the finest artisans to craft our glassware – a pair of tumblers, a water jug, and an ice bucket – we sought an exceptional specialist in Colle di Val d'Elsa, Tuscany. The company boasts a history of collaborations with influential designers and architects in a region distinguished by more than 800-years of dedication to glass mastery.
An arduous process, our glassware pieces are crafted from only the finest, natural materials. The purity of the glass derives from the use of sand from Switzerland. The vibrant colours emerge from natural minerals, with a drop of titanium developing into an amber hue, a nod to the colour of The Macallan whisky, while the green reflects our inspiration from nature and The Macallan Estate.
The shapes are exclusively designed for this collection as visual expressions of our collaboration. Circular bases evolve to square tops, symbolic of the creative worlds of the McCartney sisters; the square reflects Mary’s perspective as a photographer and the circle captures Stella’s pivotal influence in the circular world of fashion and sustainability.
The glass shapes are formed through hand-sculpted moulds, every one an artwork in its own right. Exceptional delicacy is required when filling the mould and embossing the Stella and Mary McCartney logo onto the surface, before each piece is hand polished and etched with The Macallan logo and Easter Elchies House.
The Making Of
The Ceramics
We partnered with a renowned ceramicist near Florence, Italy, to create our flask, bowls, coasters and ice stamps.
Crafting ceramics is a natural, but complex process. Our pieces have been realised by ceramicists who have perfected their techniques over decades.
A specially crafted press mould shapes the clay. A three-fired drying process, using a traditional oven, follows. Meticulous hand painting colours each piece with an ombre blend – an extremely complex technique to master – to signify our collaboration with Stella and Mary McCartney.
United in our admiration for the natural world and by shared, long-standing principles to strive for a better way, our ceramic paint is made from entirely natural materials, with no trace of the toxic heavy metals commonly found in ceramic paints. Our chosen ceramicists believe this to be the first time that a red colour has been achieved through this process.
The Making Of
THE BRASSWARE
We have worked with a collective of brass specialists. Specific techniques were undertaken by different specialists according to their particular skills. This was a true alliance of craftspeople, intent on creating masterpieces through artistic precision
Brass is an integral material in the collection, a signature to many of the forms and finishes among the pieces, including casting, hot and cold moulding, hand bending and welding, laser etching, polishing and matte finishing.
Conscious of the natural world and our shared, long-standing principles to strive for better practices, every contributor has been aware of their environmental impact and, where possible, has minimised it accordingly.
