Distillery Tour - Frequently Asked Questions

General Tour Information

Q: Should I book a tour in advance?
A: To avoid disappointment, we recommend that tours are booked in advance to guarantee your place. Tours are available to book from 12 weeks in advance online and via phone call. If you would like to reserve a tour for less than 24 hours’ time, please call +44 (0)1340 318 000.

Q: How far in advance do I need to book?
A: We recommend that tours are booked at least 6 weeks in advance in order to avoid disappointment. Please note tours are available to book 12 weeks in advance.

Q: Do I need to pay in advance or can I pay on the day?
A: We kindly ask for a pre-payment at the time of booking.

Q: Can I just arrive at the distillery without booking?
A: You can arrive at the distillery without booking however we cannot guarantee availability on our tour experiences. Tours are available to be booked online and by contacting us by email [email protected] or telephone +44 (0)1340 318 000.

Q: What should I wear on the tour?
A: The tour takes place throughout our Distillery and Visitor Experience, and as you will enter the production area, we suggest wearing comfortable, layered clothing due to the warmth of our stills. Sensible footwear is also advised. There is a cloakroom available at The Macallan reception should you require it.

Q: Are all tour experiences guided?
A: Yes, all tour groups will be guided through the distillery by one of our hosts.

Q: How many spaces are available on each tour?
A: Tour numbers vary dependant on the selected experience. Please refer to the experience section for maximum group numbers. Tours can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests on The Six Pillars Experience, 10 guests on The Macallan Heritage Experience and 8 guests on The Peerless Spirit Experience.

Q: What if I want to book for more people than there are places on a tour?
A: In order to deliver the best experience for our visitors, we only host a maximum of 12 people on The Six Pillars Experience, 10 people on the Heritage Experience and 8 people on the Peerless Spirit Experience. As a result, for all group bookings, we would need to accommodate your visitors on site at selected time slots across the tour availability. We would request that only the guests taking part in the tour experience arrive on site ten minutes before the allocated tour time  To enquire, please contact a member of our team on +44 (0)1340 318 000 or email [email protected]. Due to the nature of our site access and car park location, we cannot accommodate coaches with capacity exceeding 18 people. For visitors arriving in large motor vehicles seating between 6 and 18 guests, please advise us in advance via phone call or email for alternative access instructions. 

Q: What do I do if I want to change the date or time of my tour?
A: Please call a member of our team on +44 (0)1340 318 000 or email [email protected] to change the date or time of your tour. This can be done up to 48 hours prior to your original booking. After this time, no changes can be made.

Q: What is your cancellation and refunds policy?
A: We will provide refunds if tours are cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the tour time. After this time, no refunds will be given. Please call a member of our team on +44 (0)1340 318 000 [email protected] to arrange a refund. For more information, please refer to our Distillery Tour Terms and Conditions.

Q: Are children permitted on the tour?
A: Guests must be over the age of 18 years old to participate in our tour experiences. Guests of all ages are permitted in our Visitor Experience including The Elchies Brasserie and The Macallan Boutique. The Macallan Bar is open to guests over the age of 18– we operate a Challenge 25 policy, please remember to bring ID.

Q: Is there a café?
A: The Elchies Brasserie, located within our Visitor Experience, offers great Scottish produce with a twist, and takes inspiration from the long-standing relationship we have enjoyed with El Celler de Can Roca, twice voted best restaurant in the world. 

Summer hours (April – October)

Q: Is there a gift shop?
A: The Macallan Boutique is located within the Visitor Experience and offers a selection of The Macallan and gifts to purchase.

Q: What products do you sell in the gift shop?
A: The Macallan Boutique has a comprehensive range of The Macallan for sale and also sells a range of whisky related gifts, glassware and merchandise.

Q: How can I get to the distillery by public transport?
A: Unfortunately, at present there is no public transport that serves the Visitor Experience directly. There are several train stations in the surrounding area however guests will then need to drive or to take a taxi to access the distillery. Please note it is not advised to walk from Craigellachie to The Macallan Estate as there is no pedestrian walkway.

Q: What's the nearest train station to the distillery?
A: The nearest train stations to the distillery are Aviemore and Elgin.

Q: Is there disabled access?
A: Our Distillery and Visitor Centre is fully DDA compliant. Please call a member of our team on +44 (0)1340 318 000 for further information or access requirements. If you require assistance whilst on site, please use the call button located in The Macallan Visitor Experience car park and a member of our team will be delighted to assist you.

Q: Is a tasting included in each experience?
A: Yes, there is a tasting included in each experience. Product will vary dependant on tour type and product availability.

Q: What if I’m driving, can I still take part in the tasting?
A: Yes, you are able to nose throughout the tasting following your tour experience. However no tasting will be allowed. We will provide complimentary bottles to allow you to take your drams away, should you be driving.


Q: Can I take photographs and video?
A: Guests are permitted to take photographs and video throughout most of the Distillery and Visitor Experience. There are some parts of the tour where photography is not permitted, and your host will make you aware of these areas.

Q: Is there parking at the distillery?
A: Entry to the distillery is available from the B9102. This is clearly signed for visitors to The Macallan. The entrance will take you to parking for the Distillery and Visitor Experience. Due to the nature of our site access and car park location, we cannot accommodate coaches with capacity exceeding 18 people. For visitors arriving in large motor vehicles seating between 6 and 18 guests, please advise us in advance via phone call or email for alternative access instructions. 

Q: When should I arrive for my experience?
A: We recommend guests arrive to check-in with staff at the reception desk in the Visitor Experience 30 minutes prior to their tour time.

Q: What happens if I am late for my experience?
A:
 If you arrive at the Visitor Experience up to 10 minutes after the tour start time, we will do our best to catch you up with your tour group. If you arrive more than 10 minutes after the tour start time, unfortunately you will not be able to join the group and the cost of your tour will not be refunded. We recommend that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your tour start time.

Q: Where do I go when I arrive?
A: Guests should check-in at the reception desk in the Visitor Experience prior to their experience.

Q: Where does the experience start?
A: The experience will begin in The Macallan Visitor Experience where you will be welcomed by your host.

Q: What are your opening hours?
A: 
April – October: 09:30 - 18:00, 7 days a week.
     November – March: 09.30 – 17.00, 7 days a week.

The Macallan Distillery and Visitor Experience will close for the Christmas and New Year break at 17.00 on 19th December 2019 and will reopen at 09.30 on 13th January 2020.

 

Q: Can I visit Easter Elchies House?
A: Guests are welcome to visit the grounds and to take photos of the exterior of Easter Elchies House, however, guest access to Easter Elchies house is not part of the tour.

Q: Do I need to print and bring my booking confirmation email?
A: There is no requirement for guests to bring their confirmation email as we will have a record of your booking. We will ask for a name and email address on arrival to confirm your booking.

Q: Can I book for a group to visit?
A: Guests are able to book for groups of a maximum of 12 guests on the Six Pillars Experience, 10 guests on The Macallan Heritage Experience and 8 guests on The Peerless Spirit Experience. If you wish to book for a larger group, please call +44 (0)1340 318 000 and we will be happy to advise you.

Q: Do you offer discount for group bookings?
A: We do not offer a discount for group bookings.

Q: Can I still visit The Macallan Distillery if I don’t want to do a tour?
A: You can still visit The Macallan Distillery and Visitor Experience without a tour booking. If there are no tours available you can dine at The Elchies Brasserie, browse The Macallan Boutique and visit The Macallan Bar upstairs in the Visitor Experience to enjoy a dram or a cocktail overlooking our beautiful 485 acre Estate. If you are looking to visit with a group larger than 12 guests, please contact us on +44 (0)1340 318 000 prior to your visit.

 

Discover The Macallan - Festive Experience

Q. What is Discover The Macallan: Festive Experience?  
A.
The Macallan Distillery Experience will be providing guests with an exclusive evening curated for the festive period, which will bring the beauty of the setting of The Macallan Estate to life. 

Through an intimate experience, guests can enjoy an experience that immerses them in the world of The Macallan, while also being served a bespoke two course meal created by Head Chef, Alan Robertson.

The event will feature a specially created welcome cocktail called ‘Gloaming Sunset’, which has been developed by Matthew Anderson, Bartender, served with canapes inspired by our Scottish heritage. Guests will then be served their meal that will be accompanied by a selection of exclusive drams to sample.  

Guests will also be taken on an exclusive after-hours Distillery Experience tour and then there will be the opportunity to browse The Macallan Boutique for some select gifts for when only the exceptional is acceptable. 

The exquisite evening will come to a close with a dram under the magical setting of The Macallan Christmas Tree, before guests will be able to depart with a personalised gift to treasure memories of their time at The Macallan Estate.    

Q. When will it take place?

This exclusive event will take place at The Macallan Distillery Experience on the 5 December from 6.00pm until 10.30pm.

A. Guests will be able to enjoy an exclusive after-hours evening at The Macallan Distillery Experience, including a two-course meal in The Elchies Brasserie and a dram under the magical setting of The Macallan Christmas Tree led by our General Manager, Stuart Cassells.  

Q. Will this be a private event? Will the Distillery Experience be closed to other guests?

The exclusive after-hours evening will be a private event for only guests attending Discover The Macallan – Festive Experience. 

Q. How much does it cost?

The experience will cost £120 per person.

Tour 2: The Macallan Heritage Experience

Q: What is included in the Macallan Heritage Experience? What area of the distillery will I see?
A: The Macallan Heritage Experience begins with an in depth introduction into the history behind the world’s ultimate luxury spirit, The Macallan. With a dram in hand and accompanied by one of our experienced hosts you will explore the Jewel Wall, learning about The Macallan’s journey since its founding by Alexander Reid on a plateau above the River Spey in 1824. During this experience, you will learn about our journey from cask to glass and gain an in-depth insight into The Macallan’s passionate obsession with pushing the boundaries of excellence. You will be guided through a tutored tasting of The Macallan range in our iconic Cave Privée where you will sample our rich new make spirit followed by three specially selected drams. Upon departure, you will receive a Macallan Copita tasting glass to commemorate your visit.

Explore our Jewel Wall and enjoy a dram whilst learning about what has shaped The Macallan throughout generations. Join one of our Macallan hosts and venture into our production area, where you will spend an hour discovering the intricacies involved in making the world’s ultimate luxury spirit and exploring the uncompromising story behind our curiously small stills and distilling process.  Your host will then delve into the mastery behind exceptional oak casks for which The Macallan is renowned. After your tour has concluded, you will sample our rich new make spirit and enjoy a dram in our iconic Cave Privée, before your host accompanies you to your final tasting where you will enjoy an exclusive whisky flight containing three carefully selected drams of The Macallan. This experience involves a short walk on our Estate so please dress appropriately. In celebration of your visit to The Macallan, you will receive a special Macallan tasting glass.
