Albert Watson has reviewed the top entries

Revealing The Macallan Masters of Photography winners

The day has come for the winners of The Macallan Masters of Photography Masterclass to be revealed. Albert Watson has reviewed the top entries and judged them 'applying the same criteria he does with his own work – looking for memorability, artistic content and, of course, an image that has charisma'.

A year ago Albert captured the journey of The Macallan's exceptional oak casks from the forests in Northern Spain, via the cooperage in Jerez, Southern Spain, to their final destination – The Macallan distillery in Speyside, Scotland. We asked you to upload your own pictures of a journey you had taken. The response was overwhelming – 4,000 pictures were uploaded and 94,000 votes cast to arrive at the Top 20 that we passed to Albert Watson who judged them and chose the winners of the ultimate trip to Scotland with VisitScotland, Nikon camera equipment and an annual subscription to Digital Camera magazine.

With no further ado, please find below the winners of the first The Macallan Photography Masterclass:

First Prize – Waiting for the Eclipse by Luke Bhothipiti

The story: A photograph of my friends standing around a fire for warmth waiting for the lunar eclipse on 12/21/2010. We all made the trip into the country for the best possible view of an event that only comes around every 460 years. This would also be the last photograph of everyone together before they would embark on their own personal journeys.

Albert Watson: 'I like the intent of the shot, the composition, the ice cold of the sky, and the ghostly group of figures around the warm fire. It spoke to me emotionally. Of all the entries, this image felt to me the most original.'

Second Prize – The Raging Bull by Muhammad Fadli

The story: Pacu Jawi, which means The Bull's Race, is a traditional festival of West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is a celebration of the farmer for the previous harvesting season.

Albert Watson: 'It's just simply a great piece of spontaneous photography that captures the power of the event perfectly.'

Third Prize – A motion shot of a 1948 GMC by John Jackson

The story: It just shows the loneliness of being out on the open road alone in some vintage Iron, and that's what makes it special to me.

Albert Watson: 'The stillness of the sky and car contrasting against the apparent speed of the road. The composition and contrast is excellent.'

Fourth Prize - Dark night so cold and lonely by Rob Dallas

The story: Not being afraid of cold weather, I stepped outside on this dark, so cold and lonely night. I found the bleakness of a winter's night and captured the real beauty of the contrast and color ...leaving just the distant sign orange ... warm and inviting ... like a fire or hearth ...winter is not just cold, it is also a place to find warmth.

Albert Watson: '{A} wonderful night shot in the snow. Technically excellent, and for sure the title 'cold and lonely' is appropriate. You feel this in the photograph.'

Congratulations to all the winners. We would like to thank ALL contributors and people who voted. We were very impressed with the quality of the images, as was Albert Watson. A second Masterclass is in the planning. Watch this space. In the meantime please review the entries in the gallery.

The Macallan Masters of Photography Albert Watson edition Single Malt, matured for 20 years in sherry seasoned oak casks, has received great reviews (link to some reviews, e.g. CaskStrength). Some bottles are still up for grabs. The 36 bottles of 1946 limited edition with matching platinum prints have nearly sold out with only a couple left. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing either expression.
