The Story of The Home Collection, River Spey

The second release in The Macallan Home Collection is a tribute to our extraordinary Estate, inspired by the natural beauty of The Macallan's birthplace and the River Spey.

The stunning painting on the front of the pack is the work of photo-realist artist Michelle Lucking, and captures the River Spey in its majestic winter beauty. The Spey, which flows gently through our Estate, is an enduring source of inspiration and an essential part of our whisky-making process. We are proud custodians of our 1.5-mile stretch of the river, protecting its waters and the wildlife around it.

Michelle works with her fingers to bring her subjects, most often water, to life. She has used natural pigmented pastels to create a collection of six original pastel paintings of the River Spey, three of which are included in the art folio. The colours she has chosen echo the earthy hues of umber, russet and gold found within our whiskies.

Michelle Lucking is an award-winning international pastel artist, specialising in realism to create large-scale, beautiful seascapes and underwater portraits. Her art explores the contrasting raw power and calm serenity of the differing states of water, and the technical challenge of capturing both its translucency and movement.

Her work is collected and exhibited internationally. In 2017, she won the prestigious Annie Longley award at the annual British Pastel Society Exhibition. She is a brand ambassador for the internationally acclaimed pastel company Unison Colour and has been featured in several magazine publications including Artist and Illustrator. Her work has also appeared on television.

"Water, for me, is a constant source of inspiration. I love exploring it, painting it. When The Macallan asked me to capture the majestic River Spey and its importance to them, their whisky and the Estate as part of The Home Collection, it just felt like a really brilliant fit."
