In celebration of our 200th Anniversary, The Macallan proudly presents TIME : SPACE, a tribute to our past and future.
This extraordinary release features an exceptionally rare 1940 vintage, bottled in 2024. Matured for over eight decades, at 84 years old it is the oldest whisky ever released by The Macallan.
Paired with this is the inaugural whisky from our Distillery which opened in 2018, a remarkable 2018 vintage, bottled in 2024 and representing the future.
The vessel for TIME : SPACE is a ground-breaking dual chamber where the exceptional whiskies form the heart of the piece, brought to life stylistically with the idea of time travel in a retro futuristic way.
Availability
Only 200 of this rare and unique product will be available, one for each year of The Macallan’s history.
Inspired by our 200-year milestone, The Macallan has created a world where time ebbs and flows and nature protects what is most precious, with spikes protecting what is beautiful and fragile.
In TIME : SPACE, we explore The Macallan’s historic ties with nature, encountering flora and fauna such as the thistle, which is Scotland’s national emblem. We also see the majestic Andalusian horses, linked to the cooperages of Jerez, Spain, and the peacock, a symbol of natural colour for the brand.
Our journey delves beneath the crystal-clear waters of a river inspired by the River Spey, and ends with a dramatic eclipse that reveals the TIME : SPACE vessel.

WHISKY MASTERY
The Macallan’s Whisky Mastery Team has crafted the special 84 Years Old release from some of the oldest and rarest whiskies in our warehouses. Two hand-selected casks have been expertly brought together for this unique expression.
The journey began on January 1, 1940, when the new make spirit was first filled into casks. Unusually for The Macallan, this whisky was distilled using peated malt barley, influenced by the historical context of the era.
New Horizons
The single malt housed in the central chamber represents the future. This 2018 vintage bottled in 2024 is five years old.
This is a key moment in our history, as this is the first ever release of a whisky distilled in our Distillery, which opened the same year.
The character of TIME : SPACE 2018 vintage is incredibly well developed. This is partly as a result of the decision to use sherry-seasoned American oak hogsheads for this particular maturation.
A FITTING TRIBUTE
Two symbolic expressions of The Macallan, shaped by an ongoing dedication to using only the very best sherry-seasoned oak casks. This momentous release spans eras of incomparable craftsmanship and creativity, a fitting tribute to both our past and our future.

JOURNEY OF THE PAST
The meticulously selected casks for the 1940 vintage have spent more than eight decades maturing peacefully in warehouses surrounded by the nature of Speyside.
Over time, the interaction between the maturing spirit and the sherry seasoned European oak casks has created a single malt whisky with a rich natural colour and a full, long-lasting flavour unique to a malt of this great age.
This is the oldest whisky ever released by The Macallan, a manifestation of our legacy of incomparable single malt whisky mastery over the last two centuries.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
The first whisky to emerge from this Distillery, The 2018 expression carries forward the legacy of excellence that has marked our single malts since 1824, and also provides a complimentary counterpoint to the 1940 vintage.
As a result, this truly unique release travels on a journey through flavour and time from the depths of the past, to the vibrancy of the future.
PRESENTATION
TIME : SPACE is presented in a ground-breaking vessel, representative of a time machine. The outer chamber is a ring-shaped decanter holding the 1940 vintage, 84-year-old whisky. The inner chamber is a removable decanter holding the 2018 vintage, five-year-old whisky.
The vessel is housed in a wood sculpture made of American and European oak, with a bold, 200-spike design that represents nature’s protection.

Aroma
Dark chocolate-coated ginger, sticky dates and leather, with antique oak and hints of coffee.
Palate
Charred pineapple and baked peaches, crystallised ginger, aniseed, blackberry jam, woodsmoke, resin and caramelised sugar.
Finish
An extremely long finish with notes of dark chocolate and toasted oak.

Nose
Vibrant notes of fresh green apple and ripe pears, leads onto rich sticky toffee, honey, vanilla custard and soft woodspice.
Palate
Golden sultanas and baked apples develop into buttery pastry dusted in icing sugar. Hints of lemon and lime follow, alongside vanilla shortbread.
Finish
A medium finish, creamy, with sweet oak.

“As a Whisky Mastery Team, we nose and assess casks of The Macallan at various ages to get a deep understanding of their maturation. The prospect of selecting a younger cask created a lot of excitement in the sample room – it is an opportunity to give others an insight into the future.
We were drawn to whiskies from 2018, an important vintage, as it marks the first year of production in our new Distillery, a significant moment marking the future of The Macallan. A fusion of art and science has ensured that we have achieved a continuity of spirit, character and quality from the old to the new Distillery”.
