    With the first radio broadcast of the ‘War of the Worlds’, Orson Welles created panic in America. Despite disclaimers that identified it as a dramatisation (including several live announcements), the broadcast was mistaken for actual news flashes announcing a Martian invasion of Earth. This year also witnessed the first successful ascent of the infamous north face of The Eiger in the Alps.
