    The first non-stop flight around the world was completed by Captain James Gallagher of the US Air Force, and his crew of 14, in an aircraft called ‘Lucky Lady II’. Arthur Miller’s play ‘Death of a Salesman’ won the Pulitzer Prize, while Mao Zedong became the first chairman of the People’s Republic of China with the ending of the Chinese civil war.
