    In the year that World War II started, nylon stockings first went on sale for the first time in the USA, the classic movie ‘Gone with the Wind’ premiered, and The World Fair opened in New York. Frank Sinatra made his recording debut and, with help from University of Chicago physicist Arthur Compton, General Electric invented a new, efficient form of illumination – the fluorescent light.
