    THE YEAR THAT WAS

    1940

Literary giant Ernest Hemingway wrote ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’, which drew on his experiences as a correspondent covering the Spanish civil war. Karl K. Pabst of the Bantam Car Co., Butler, Pennsylvania, produced a four-wheel drive vehicle that would become famous as the Jeep. The name was derived from its military designation of GP – short for ‘General Purpose’.
