    The world famous Hope diamond was donated to The Smithsonian, while the US Government States established NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to coordinate its own efforts to reach space. Both the computer modem and the laser were invented this year. David Lean’s ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ wins a total of seven awards at the Oscars including Best Picture.
