    Almost four years after the end of World War II, clothes rationing in Great Britain ended, whilst Germany was divided into two nations, East and West Germany. The first Volkswagen car, the VW Type 1, arrives in the US and while only two models are sold that year, it goes on to become an automotive phenomenon. ‘Hamlet’, starring Laurence Oliver, wins Best Picture at the Oscars.
