Behind the Home Collection, The Distillery
The Home Collection is a celebration of our time-honoured traditions and community spirit, both encapsulated at The Macallan Distillery and around the world. We take pride in our home, and the people who work here.
Artist and The Macallan employee Colin Rizza has deep ties to The Macallan Distillery and the community in the heart of Speyside, Scotland. He has worked at the Distillery for thirty-two years alongside various members of his family including his son, niece, daughter and granddaughter.
Inspired by the natural beauty of The Macallan’s 485-acre Estate, Colin created the artwork for this fine collection, beautifully depicting in watercolour key features of the Distillery, and shared some of his thoughts about the collection.

“I started off by sketching some scenes from around the Distillery. I chose the image of the main entrance as the composition looked nice and it shows the biggest of the domes to good effect, as does the image of the glass frontage.
To show a scene from the inside, I focused on one of The Macallan's Curiously Small Copper Stills. The copper looked great and I was also able to capture some of the timber ceilings. I had not done watercolour work for quite some time, so I was excited to be given the opportunity to use them again”.

What first sparked your interest in painting and drawing?
“My parents always encouraged me and my art. I attended The Glasgow School of Art night classes for a couple of years when I was in secondary school. My Dad would drive me there and sit outside reading his newspaper and smoking his pipe, then drive me home again when the class was over.
They bought me a set of oils when I was very young and I have been messing around with oils ever since. My wife, daughter and granddaughter also paint; I enjoy looking at other people's art. I am always learning, I guess it's in my blood”.
What does home mean to you?
"I grew up in Glasgow, my father was born in Elgin and my family have lived in Rothes a few miles from The Macallan Estate for many years. I moved to Rothes in 1982 having fallen in love with the scenery, the quiet way of life, and the people.
It's a beautiful place to live and I wanted my children to grow up and enjoy all that the area has to offer”.
