    Sir Winston Churchill died and the first US ground troops are deployed in the Vietnam War. In innovation, the world’s first roofed stadium, the Houston Astrodome, was built, and Japan’s Bullet Train began operation. This year also saw the invention of astroturf, soft contact lenses and compact discs. In London, the miniskirt, designed by Mary Quant, became all the rage in female fashion.
