    The Macallan purchased Easter Elchies House, John F Kennedy won the US presidential election, and Nikita Khrushchev ordered the construction of the Berlin Wall. On the 3rd March, Elvis Presley landed in Scotland, a stopover at Prestwick Airport being his one and only visit. On his yacht, Gypsy Moth II, Englishman Francis Chichester made a record solo Atlantic crossing in 40 days.
