    King George VI died aged 56, after a long illness, with his funeral being held at Windsor Castle. Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed organised what came to be recognised as the first rock ‘n’ roll concert. The NME (New Musical Express) went on sale in the UK for the first time, and Ian Fleming published his novel ‘Casino Royale’ which heralded the arrival of secret agent 007, aka James Bond.
